can I bake clay covered wood in the oven?
this is probably a very silly question but i want to use terra cotta clay in my vivarium which means i have to oven bake it first so that it is water poof, but i will be putting in into a wooden backing, is it okay to put the wood in the oven too or am i just asking for trouble, also how long would the Clay have to be in the oven, it wont be any more than an inch thick
Terracotta clay (earthenware) will not mature in an ordinary oven. It must be fired in a kiln to the specific temperature for that clay. Wood in your regular oven is also a bad idea. Most lumber is treated to keep away bugs and mold. Heating the wood could leave toxins in your food oven, not to mention the risk of fire.
Also, earthenware clay does not vitrify (become waterproof) It must be glazed for that.
