How to Give Your Toaster Oven a Thorough Cleaning

Toaster ovens are nifty little versatile appliances. You can cook pretty much anything in them - not just break or other baked goods. If you're like me, you probably use your toaster oven constantly. I even use it to cook my dinners sometimes because the small oven heats up so quickly, and the food tastes much better than if cooked in a microwave. It can get quite dirty, so let's go through the steps I use, and you can use as well, to keep your toaster oven squeaky clean.

Materials Required

• Soft lint-free cloth

• Sponge

• Sanitizing spray or all-purpose cleaning solution

• Windex or glass cleaner

• Dish soap

1. Prior to Cleaning Your Oven

First follow these safety instructions prior to engaging in cleaning your toaster oven:

When cleaning your toaster oven, make sure it is unplugged and cooled down if used recently. Never soak or immerse your toaster in water while cleaning. Also never spray water directly on or inside the oven as this can damage some of the electrical components.

2. Cleaning the Exterior

First we'll start with the exterior of the oven. You want to use a decent cleaning solution or sanitizing spray because most likely there will be stains and grease marks that a mild solution won't be able to remove. We'll also use a soft cloth to do the job. I wouldn't use a paper towel as portions of a paper towel can rip and get stuck in the various crevices of the toaster oven, and make sure the cloth doesn't have much lint on it because you don't want lint in your oven.

Just simply spray the solution on the each exterior surface and wipe well with the soft cloth. If there is a tough stain, spray the stain directly with the solution and let sit for a couple minutes, and then wipe diligently with the soft cloth.

3. Cleaning the Door

The doors for toaster ovens are usually comprised of glass or have a glass section to allow you to look into the oven, so for the glass surface we will use Windex or your favorite glass cleaner. Just repeat the process used for the exterior surfaces, using the glass cleaner instead of the cleaning solution or sanitizing spray.

4. Cleaning the Interior

First open the oven door and remove the rack and tray from the interior of the oven. If the interior is really dirty and has a lot of food build-up, take the empty oven and hold with the open side down over the sink or trash can. Lightly shake and tap the oven repeatedly for just a few seconds to shake the food particles loose and let fall into the sink or trash can.

There will most likely be some additional food build-up stuck on the walls so it would be best to use a sponge rather than a cloth to clean the interior. If you use a sponge that has an abrasive surface, this will do a better job of scraping any solid build-up off the interior walls. So take your sponge and rinse it in warm soapy water, and scrub the interior surfaces of the oven.

Rinse the sponge in soapy water as needed to keep the sponge relatively clean. After the interior is finished, you can scrub the rack and oven tray as well, or alternatively you could wash these items in the dishwasher. When done cleaning, let the oven and its components air dry completely, which shouldn't take more than a few minutes. Make sure the oven door is open to let the interior dry as well.

These are all the steps which will enable you to clean your toaster oven thoroughly. If done on a regular basis - at least a couple times a week, you'll keep your oven in great shape and looking like new for months to come.
