NOTHING cleans my indoor bricks. Help!?

I've tried soap and water, TSP, TSP substitute, bleach, oven cleaner, and muratic acid (diluted and undiluted). All with different brushes. These bricks have heavy dirt rubbed in as they are in front of my fireplace. Any ideas? Thanks very much for your advice.

Hi Jeff,
We owned a home once, and we opened it all up exposing this huge brick chimmeny....and I used a diluted mixture of lye water, and scrubbed it with a wire brush. Seemed to clean it good. and it was very old. The home was actually built around 1908. So there was a lot of debre to clean and we just used lye, and hot water,,,, It took days and days for it to completely dry tho. But it looked nice when it was all done.
Good Luck!!
