Life After Cheese: Changing Your Choices When Your Health Is At Stake

Individuals suffering from gallbladder attacks or heart issues often have to adjust diet for the sake of health. This hub details my particular dealings with cheese as it relates to my personal experience. Neither disease should be taken lightly, and the first line of defense is consulting with your doctor over your particular circumstances.

Ignoring your health can lead to serious, even fatal outcome...my great-grandmother died from a ruptured gall bladder.  These are some strategies I have implemented in order to avoid serious consequences, having consulted with a health professional regarding my symptoms.  If you suffer from gall bladder attacks, take them seriously, and see your doctor.

Watching What You Eat, or Suffering the Consequences

One only need experience one severe gallbladder attack to know the discomfort that comes is never worth that seemingly divine food. Whether you love lasagna, crave cheesecake, or just live on the greasy cheeseburgers that so many fast food restaurants offer, you know the price you will pay for indulging. While severe problems may need serious intervention, including possible surgery, it is important in the interim to carefully select alternatives which will help keep those challenges at bay.

Likewise, those pre-disposed to heart disease or high cholesterol must carefully consider their choices, as poor eating can lead to severe problems. Sadly, cheese tends to be a major culprit in the battle against cholesterol and heart disease. In my own effort to avoid gall bladder irritations, the side benefit has been lower cholesterol levels. Lowering the intake of cheese, particularly, is probably the biggest factor in this improvement.

Food On The Go

One of the primary reasons for using too much cheese in the household menu has been a busy lifestyle. Sports seasons for the kids mean hectic schedules filled with practices and games. Cheese lends itself well to sandwich making, a quick grab and go meal. Further, it's easy to put a sprinkling of cheddar cheese into a tortilla, fold it, microwave for thirty seconds, and eat that fast quesadilla on the way. With a large family, health I have a double sized griddle, and can make 6 flour tortilla quesadillas at a time, 8 with corn tortillas. It's quick and easy. For me, not a good health choice, however.

Less is More

One of my first alternatives is simply using less. Each individual will have to develop his own strategies for balancing health with diet. I can get away with a sprinkling of cheese. Better yet, I just eat the toasted or heated tortilla, and the kids eat the cheese. A full, dripping quesadilla is not necessary, and moderation is a great way to help others in the household to adapt to a low cheese diet. Chances are good that family tendencies toward heart disease and gall bladder disease will eventually affect one's youngsters; hence, it is wise to help them adapt healthy eating habits early on.

Likewise, when we make homemade pizzas, there is usually a high veggie, low cheese vesion amongst the batch. Further, a lowfat, part skim mozzarella reduces the fat, and does not cause problems for me. Pizza parlor fare means miserable midnight pain, but homemade pizza with limited, lowfat cheese is tolerable.

In my Dad's dealings with cholesterol, pizza parlor pies didn't have to be completely eliminated. It is possible to special order a no-cheese pizza. Heavy on the mushrooms and olives, lacking cheese completely, it's a delicious alternative.

My last major gall bladder attack was triggered by lasagna. My next lasagna will, no doubt, be cheese free. Likewise, my last batch of enchiladas included a pan of no-cheese chicken enchiladas. Not worth the pain. Eliminating cheese where possible saves miserable nights.

Non-fat and Low-Fat

My main use of non-fat cheese products has involved cream cheese. The texture isn't quite up to par with normal cream cheese. However, I have exchanged the non-fat variety in order to make cheesecake, as well as icings. It will take some work to accomplish a texture and taste that I like. Still, given the alternative, it's the most workable option for me.

Non-fat cottage cheese is a great choice as a side, with a salad, and will probably be my beginning ingredient in developing a viable lasagna recipe. Unlike the non-fat cream cheese, non-fat cottage cheese has a flavor that is pleasing, as well as texture.

Low-fat part skim mozzarellas do not trigger problems for me, and therefore, in moderation, have still been workable. String cheeses have been a good snack, in moderation.

Pay Attention

It's important to pay attention to what you eat, if you want to maintain health and avoid problems. Cheese hides in sandwiches and salads, as well as in so many main dishes, and so eating out is a challenge. Further, its ease of use in simple snacks and sandwiches makes it a go-to food for many who lead a busy life. With some caution, alternate choices can be made, and quantities can be limited in one's diet. Serious symptoms should never be ignored, as the results could be health deadly.
