North Cyprus cuisine and holidays

Turkish style fast food is extremely popular in North Cyprus. Its popularity makes it difficult for the big international fast food chains to make market penetration. The biggest market for Burger King and the like is not the local population but European visitors and the local ex-pat community.

It is lack of understanding of the various dishes which deters many visitors from trying out the fast food in North Cyprus. Unlike burgers etc., the local fast food is very healthy and, even better, it is very cheap.

Lahmacun is very popular and there often Lahmacun houses entirely devoted to serving lahmacun in various forms. Basically, it is a thin round piece of dough about the size of a dinner plate topped with either beef or lamb mince and cooked on demand. It originated in the early Syrian cuisine and in many ways is the forerunner of the pizza. Sometimes it is called the Turkish pizza. They are very inexpensive and a light appetite would manage with one but most locals would order three or four.

Equally popular is the durum or wrap. Again, a similar round piece of dough about similar size but this it is filled with either small pieces of chicken or lamb kebab and salad then rolled up and wrapped in grease-proof paper. Although it can be used as a take-away, it is more often eaten in the restaurant. The salad may contain small but very hot green chilli peppers or they may be served separately. They will leave them out if requested but they often ask visitors if they would like them included.

Kebabs themselves are also very popular. These are generally small kebabs of chicken or lamb and they are served on a plate with salad. Beer is served in most of these fast food places but the most popular drink with the locals is ayran, a slightly salty yoghurt drink.

For something more substantial try a pide in a pide house. These are more like pizzas. They have a thicker base than lahmacun are often boat shaped with curled up edges and have a variety of fillings, tomato, cheese, meat or chicken. One of the pleasures of North Cyprus holidays is trying out the fast food.
