Should i take protein shakes when trying to burn fat?

I've been going to the gym for a couple of months and (stupidly) was trying to burn fat whilst building muscle, which i'm now told is virtually futile.

Since then, i've just been doing cardio 3-5 times a week as i play football usually twice a week (about half hour on the bike = approx 10km and approx 2km rowing) with a small amount of weights, rotating between different muscle sets just to feel the burn the next day (been told this helps with calorie burning?).

my diet is ok. could be better but have cut out booze during the week, dont eat fast food or chocolate, but occassionally just whack a pizza/processed frozen food in the oven for ease.

should i take the protein shake i have too, and if so, how often? (Sci-MX Whey Protein)

Thanks!

Sounds like you are doing well! There's no reason why burning fat while building muscle is not possible, but you need to get the balance correct with regards to your diet and exercises. If you want to take the protein shakes, make sure you factor them into your daily calorie intake, as they can be be quite calorific. In order to burn fat you just need to be using more calories than you take in. It doesn't really matter what the food is, just the energy value (with regards to losing weight).

Most meat eaters will already get enough protein in their diets daily, but if you get less than 0.8g of protein for every 1kg of body weight each day, then you might benefit from adding some more into your diet (for example, a 50kg person would want to get about 40g of protein in their diet).

As for how often, your body can only process about 20g to 30g of protein every 3 to 4 hours, so space it out through the day.If you take, say 40g of protein in one go, then you are just adding in more calories for very little other benefit.

Best of luck with the efforts
