Solar Ovens - Make Your Next Meal with Solar Energy

Today "going green" seems to be the catch phrase on everyone's lips. Everyone from America's Next Top Model to car companies are latching onto that to prove that they are respecting our environment. Cooking with a solar cooker is one more way that you too can go green!

A solar cooker, or solar oven, is mechanism that uses sunlight to cook food rather than electricity or gas. Often they are used to cook outdoors, and can be a fun addition to any camping trip. Beyond merely being fun, they are ideal if you do not have access to fuel for your cooking.

Solar cookers come in several different varieties: A box cooker, panel cooker, and a parabolic cooker. Though all of these ovens operate on the same principal, using sunlight to heat up the food, each is constructed rather differently and is appropriate for different circumstances. While a box cooker is a better choice when you're looking to cook a large amount of food, a parabolic cooker is capable of cooking the food faster.

Solar cookers will take more time than a traditional oven, with the exception of a parabolic cooker, so you should plan on allowing approximately two times the regular cooking time. However, as with any cooking method, this is dependent on the type of food being prepared. The strength and angle of the sunlight will also affect cook time.

Now that you're interested in cooking with a solar oven, you have to figure out where to get one. Solar cookers are readily available both online and in stores. Typically, a solar oven that has been purchased will work quite well, but if you are a more adventurous sort, you can certainly construct your own solar cooker. You can construct a solar oven out of something as simple as cardboard and in a short amount of time be cooking your first solar meal!

The one drawback to cooking with a solar cooker is that since it cannot retain any unused energy you can only use it in direct sunlight. Unfortunately, you will not be able to whip up a delicious meal after sundown.

In the constant search for ways to use our earth in less intrusive ways, a solar cooker is a unique and fun avenue to try. Not only will you end up with a delicious product, but you will also be conserving our earth's resources. By putting in some simple effort, you will be able to have a truly unique meal.
