Removing paint from a brick house?
Has anyone successfully removed paint from brick? We just bought a brick home, and it has area's where it looks like someone cleaned their paint brush off on the side of the house???? I heard oven cleaner and a metal brush. Do not want to pressure wash or sand blast. The house was built in the 80's, and I do not want to damage the bricks.
The best way to remove paint from brick is to use a gel or paste remover. It is tedious, but it will have the least impact on the brick itself. There are a lot of products that you can find simply by doing a web search
You are right to not want to sandblast or pressure wash. Sandblasting brick or stone surfaces, using dry or wet grit or other abrasives will permanently erode the surface of the brick and accelerate deterioration. Applying high pressure water will damage masonry and the mortar joints. Using a pressure washer also increases the risk of introducing moisture in to the wall cavity, which will eventually destroy any insulation you have, create mold, and if the brick is a veneer over wood framing, cause the wood to rot.
Good luck!
